JOE'S WORLD OF SPORT - VERSION 3
The 2009 Absa Currie Cup has certainly lived up to all expectations with 6 teams still in the hunt for a possible semi final placing later this season.
The return of the Springboks has certainly added to the occasion with the Sharks and the Bulls benefiting the most.......
Looking back at last weekends results the Bulls certainly impressed in their 72-16 win over the Boland in Wellington. Derrick Kuhn played a huge role of the bench with 3 tries in quick succession while Francois Hougaard bagged a brace that earned him the man of the match award. The Bulls next meet their old foes the Cheetahs at Loftus Versveld in what will surely be the match of the weekend....
The Sharks remain in Durban having ended the Cheetahs dream run off 6 victories on the trot. The Sharks are certainly in prime position topping the table after 11 rounds while they prepare for a match with the Leopards this weekend....
Kimberley was certainly a hype of activity as the Griquas locked horns with the Lions....The match played at Diamantveld H/Skool turned into an epic which the home team sneaked by 36 points to 31....The victory keeps the Griquas alive but 3 tough matches awaits Dawie Theron's charges including a trip to Newlands against Western Province who have not been beaten at home this season....
Western Province have had to deal with a number of injury concerns while Chris Jack (returned to New Zealand) and Jean De Villiers (Munster) are no longer available for selection. The blue and white hoops start this weekend in 2nd position and will take a huge step towards hosting a semi final if they can see off the Griquas charge.....
Lastly the Lions host the Boland in Johannesburg....The hosts have to win the remainder of their matches to have any chance of a place in the last 4 while they will also need a few favors from others...
No matter who you support their is little debating the importance of the Absa Currie Cup Competition to both players and fans alike....
Cheers
Joe
